5 hard hitting life lessons to learn from the movie Rocky
In honor of the 40th year anniversary of Rocky, the eCommission team wanted to bring you our favorite 5 hard hitting life lessons from the greatest sports movie about prize fighters ever made. Sorry, Raging Bull fans, you can’t top Rocky Balboa in the ring of popular cinema!
Let’s face it, Rocky is one of the most inspiring movie characters of all time, if only because we can all see a little of ourselves in him. A down-and-out fighter who overcomes steep odds to go the distance with Apollo Creed. By the end of the movie you feel like you can conquer the world. If only Eye of the Tiger was always playing in the background….
To help us celebrate Rocky’s lasting impact, we rounded up our favorite Rocky quotes that inspire us to this day:
“But it ain’t how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward.”
This one’s easy! Don’t give up in the face of adversity! In real estate, as in all things in life, you’re going to fail from time to time, and you’re going to make mistakes. Sometimes life knocks you down, but you can’t stay down. True success only comes after you fail. It’s all about how you react to hardships. In the face of adversity, keep trying. Rocky never quit. No matter what your struggle is…don’t give up!
“If I Can Change, you can Change. EVERYBODY CAN CHANGE!”
It’s easy to get stuck in a rut. Days go by and you find yourself creating a comfortable routine with no surprises. One day, however, you may find yourself in a situation that requires you to change, to be really, really flexible or take a big risk to win a prize customer. You might be challenged to sell in a new area or work with clients you don’t see eye to eye with. To adapt and grow, it’s far better to not meet this change with resistance. Change is essential to growth. As Rocky said, everyone can change. It’s a matter of setting your mind to it and embracing it.
“You gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you are because of him, or her, or anybody.”
We all we all mess up from time to time. It can be tempting to blame the loss of a sale on the market or the client. This one hurts to say– but it might be something you did. That’s okay. Mistakes can also motivate you to succeed! When you realize you’re the only person who can get you to where you want to be, you will feel inspired to reach your goals. Rocky knew that he was in charge of his own fate, so he trained night and day to get the results he wanted. Even if it meant drinking raw eggs!
“I think we make a real sharp couple of coconuts – I’m dumb, you’re shy, whaddaya think, huh?”
To grow and improve as an agent, you have to recognize your weaknesses and learn to work to either improve them or at least find ways to offset them with your strengths. Rocky said his mother told him he wasn’t the smartest person, so he should learn to work with his body. When you are aware of your weaknesses you can focus on sharpening skills to counter those weaknesses. For example, if you know you’re always late, becomes an excellent planner to avoid missing meetings and events. Listen to people’s criticism and learn from it. Don’t obsess your weaknesses. Know them and do something to overcome them!
“Until you start believing in yourself, you ain’t gonna have a life.”
Believe in yourself. Sometimes you will be the only one. Rocky began his journey to success by getting kicked out of his own gym. But he believed in himself and committed to making everyone believe in him too. If you find someone doubting you, give them a reason to change their mind. Don’t take no for an answer! Have faith in yourself and your skills. When you believe in yourself, you have the power to create the life you want.
