How to use pepper spray for defense

As real estate agents, you know there’s a certain amount of risk that comes with the job. You’re showing properties in empty homes by yourself and often meeting people who likely know more about you than you do about them.

Although we hope you’re never in a situation that requires you to use pepper spray, it’s a good idea to have it at the ready to defend yourself, just in case.

Here are a few tips on using pepper spray for self-defense:

Stay a safe distance away
It’s best to stay further away from the attacker when using pepper spray to avoid getting it into your own eyes. Most pepper sprays shoot from at least 10 feet away, and leaving a safe distance in between you and the attacker will allow you to have better aim.

Practice how to use it
Although using pepper spray is pretty straightforward, you should prepare ahead of time by getting comfortable holding it and knowing how it unlocks and disarms. The last thing you want is to be facing danger and fiddling around with your pepper spray trying to figure out how to use it.

Make sure it’s accessible
Accessibility goes along with being prepared. Your pepper spray isn’t going to do you any good buried at the bottom of your purse or briefcase where it’s hard to reach. A good spot to keep it is attached to your keychain where you can access it quickly and easily. The sooner you can get to it the better!

Aim for the eyes
When it comes down to it, always aim for the eyes. Spraying the attacker’s eyes will temporarily blind them and allow you to get away to a safe place.

Conclusion
Despite our amusing GIFs above, using pepper spray is no joking matter. We encourage you to take the precautions listed above and always be sure somebody knows when and where you will be when showing property. It’s also wise to check the regulations governing the use of pepper spray for your particular state as there may be some restrictions or special requirements.
